The earliest moments of SHOTS FIRED are about learning controls. Later combat is about keeping enough awareness to make good decisions under pressure. Once more enemies share the screen, avoiding incoming fire becomes as important as landing your own shots. These tactics are designed around the game's mission progression, HUD and mixture of enemy types.
Know when the threat has changed
The training area teaches fundamental flight and aiming skills. Desert Recon introduces the campaign's initial scout drones, while Desert Outbreak adds more resilient units and quick fighters. Desert Strike increases the pressure further with rapid-fire patterns and defenses. The change matters because a simple approach that works against one weak enemy may not work against several threats attacking from different directions.
When the next wave begins, give yourself a moment to scan before committing to a long attack. Pay attention to movement speed and firing behavior. The target closest to the center of the screen is not always the one most dangerous to your ship.
Keep moving without losing your aim
A stationary aircraft can become easier for enemies to hit, but uncontrolled movement can make you miss every shot. Choose small, purposeful course changes. If you need to cross a dangerous area, a short burst of speed can help. If you have opened a safer firing angle, ease the speed and take a controlled shot. Alternate between these two states rather than attempting to attack at full speed all the time.
One useful practice is to deliberately move after each short engagement. This prevents you from building a habit of hovering in a single position when the arena becomes crowded. You don't need a dramatic maneuver each time; even a modest shift can help you reassess the battle.
Prioritize threats, not just easy points
When several enemies are active, choose one based on immediate danger. A fast opponent closing on your position may require attention before a weaker drone that happens to be easier to shoot. If a shielded opponent is taking longer than expected to defeat, consider whether eliminating another source of incoming fire first would improve your chance of surviving the entire wave.
Target selection is an ongoing process. After a successful hit or defeat, look around again. Staying focused on a single opponent for too long can leave you exposed to everything else in the arena.
Use the HUD as a tactical instrument
The top of the screen provides mission status, score, crystals and hull health. During boss encounters a dedicated boss bar may appear. Don't wait for a dramatic damage effect before checking your hull. A quick glance between engagements tells you whether you can afford an aggressive move or should concentrate on survival.
When your hull is under pressure, slow down the decision-making process. Clear space, find one threat you can handle safely and focus on avoiding additional attacks. Collecting a crystal is not worthwhile if it forces you into a barrage that ends the run.
Boss battles reward consistency
Bosses are often tempting targets because they provide a clear objective and health indicator. Yet attacking constantly without regard for return fire is risky. Treat the encounter as a series of short windows: observe the boss, avoid the next attack, create an angle, deal damage and disengage before you become trapped.
If you are repeatedly defeated in a similar way, change one habit on your next attempt. You might be overusing boost near the boss, firing plasma without a clear line, or spending too much time looking at the boss health bar. A specific adjustment is easier to evaluate than changing everything at once.
Use the intervals to prepare
The transition between missions isn't just a pause. It shows the upcoming operation and your loadout. Read the new mission's description and recall which threats caused you the most trouble. If you have access to equipment improvements, think about whether your problem is damage output or survival before deciding what to change.
If the fundamentals still feel awkward, revisit the flight controls and repeat early missions until moving and aiming no longer compete for your attention.
